One of the most popular game shows in television
history, based on the popular parlor game hangman.
"Wheel" was a successful daytime game show on NBC in
the 1970s. It exploded in popularity in the 80s with
the introduction of a syndicated version in 1983.
The game consisted of three contestants, who in turn,
spun a giant wheel containing various cash amounts
and penalty segments (bankrupt, lose a turn). The
contestant who spun a cash amount guessed a consonant
to see if it would fill a blank in a word puzzle,
if it did he or she banked the amount of the spin times
the number of letters that were in the puzzle.
Players retained control of the wheel as long as they
successfully filled in the blanks. A player could
purchase a vowel for $250. The contestant that solved
the puzzle won the money that he or she had accumulated.
The top money winner of the day played a bonus round
where he or she attempted to win a jackpot prize by
guessing another puzzle within ten seconds. The were
given the letters R, S, T, L, N, and E and could
choose three additional consonants and one vowel.
