Ben Matlock was a Southern attorney who came
on like a country boy, but don't let that fool you.
That sly old fox was full of courtroom tricks and
commanded $100,000 retainers. He was aided by his
daughter, Charlene, who was also an attorney, and
by Tyler Hudson, a private investigator.
Matlock's supporting characters showed considerable
turnover. Charlene was replaced by Michelle, who
gave way to Leanne (who was also Ben's daughter).
Ben's legman Tyler was replaced by Conrad, then
Cliff. Others seen with varying regularity were
eager law clerk Cassie, pesky neighbor Les, Cliff's
eccentric dad Billy, investigator Jerri, and a
number of judges and officials.
