Era: 1997
As the planet Earth becomes critical due to over-population,
the Robinson family is selected from more than two million
volunteers to begin the conquest of space. Believing that
the star Alpha Centauri contains a similar atmosphere,
scientists construct the Jupiter II, an electronically
sophisticated rocket ship that will initiate
man's thrust into space.
Critical, and determined to beat the United States to
Alpha Centauri, an enemy nation resorts to sabotage.
Sneaking aboard Jupiter II, Colonel Zachary Smith
reprograms the environmental control robot to destroy
the ship eight hours after take-off.
As countdown preparations continue, the Robinson family,
representing a unique blance of scientific advancement,
emotional stability, and pioneer resourcefulness, board
the craft. Entering the freezing chambers, where they are
to spend the five-and-a-half-year voyage frozen in the
state of suspended animation, systems are activated and
all hatches are secured, trapping Smith inside the ship.
The Jupiter II is launched. Penetrating a meteor shower,
the craft, unable to escape because of Smith's extra weight,
is damaged. Entering the freezing chambers, Smith releases
the pilot, geologist Major Donald West. Unaware that Smith
is an enemy, West revives the Robinsons - John, an
astrophysicist; his wife, Maureen, a biochemist; and their
children, Judy, Penny, and Will.
With blast-off time nearing eight hours, Smith attempts,
but fails to reprogram the robot. Its rampage is stopped,
but only after it seriously damages the ship. Completely
thrown off course, and unable to maintain orbit, the ship
crash lands on an unknown planet, which becomes a
temporary home and enables them to repair the ship.
Stories depict their struggle for survival and John Robinson's
attempts to continue with the original goal and find Alpha
Centauri despite Smith's endless attempts to thwart his
efforts and return to Earth.
