Marking a new era in television, Jay Leno, recently named America's Favorite TV Personality
by the 2009 Harris Poll, moved from late night to primetime on September 14 when "The Jay Leno Show"
became the first-ever entertainment program to be stripped across primetime on broadcast network television.
Comedian Jerry Seinfeld opened the premier show as Leno's first sit-down guest and he dressed the part:
the funnyman donned a full tux. "In the '90s, when we quit a show, we actually left," Seinfeld joked.
Kanye West became emotional on the premiere when asked what his late mother would have thought of the
Taylor Swift mic-swiping incident at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Jay Leno closed the first show with his classic "Headlines" segment -- a carryover from The Tonight Show.
"The Jay Leno Show" promised more comedy in the 10 o'clock hour showcasing many of the features
that have made Leno America's late-night leader for more than a dozen years.
The debut follows a carefully orchestrated transition period between The Tonight Show and NBC’s Late Night
that took place over the course of nearly five years. It began when Leno announced his decision to retire
from The Tonight Show in 2004, and Conan O'Brien was soon named his successor.
Leno continues to keep in touch with people by shaking hands and getting "one-on-one" time with audiences
all over the country, whether he takes the stage at a small club or at his weekly shows in Vegas.
Perhaps this is why he continues to exude the "everyman" style and personality that have helped him
earn millions of fans worldwide. He has been touted as one of the nicest people in show business and
undeniably the hardest working -- a winning tandem for the man who says:
"Anyone can have a life -- careers are hard to come by!"
Leno is no stranger to the talk show scene. The funnyman, who hosted The Tonight Show for 17 years,
has had a storied career chatting up and poking fun at celebrities and politicians.
