Announcers: Don Pardo Wayne Howell Sixteen contestants competed over the course of a week.
One player occupied a box built like a pulpit on center-
stage and answered riddles posed by the other 15 players.
Each riddle was worth money that accumulated until the
jackpot riddle was located and solved. A player remained
"King of the Hill" until missing a riddle. That player
then swapped places with the player who had stumped him
or her. A super jackpot was also located on the board
and involved landing on a predetermined target number
with the growing cash amount that could net the
player up to $50,000.
After a ten year absence, "Jackpot" returned with new
shows on the USA cable network. Production moved from
New York City to Toronto, Canada with Mike Darrow as host.
The basic game remained the same but several new features
were added. Any player who could "run the board" by
answering all fifteen riddles correctly won a new car.
The player who answered the most riddles during the
week won $10,000 and a player got a $1000 bonus
if he or she could go through the board without
hitting the jackpot riddle until last.
In the fall of 1989, "Jackpot" jumped from cable to first
run syndication. Geoff Edwards, the original network host,
returned, and production moved to Glendale, California.
