Marcase was a brilliant young virologist who headed a
highly trained bio-crisis team that fought biologically
spread plagues and catastrophes. Working with him were
Shiroma, a molecular geneticist whose fiancé had lost
his life to ebola while working with Marcase, and Hailey,
a security specialist who had previously worked with the
CIA. Dr. Cassian was the mysterious, politically connected
physician who had assembled the team and gave them their
assignments. Added to the team later were: Dr. Taft, a
Los Angeles-based expert in neuropathology with a big ego;
and Henry Newland, director of the Institute of Public
Health, a humorless former N.S.A. executive who
tried to do everything by the book
