Jason Alexander is celebrity self-help guru
Bob Patterson. The author of the best-selling
book I Know More Than You (and its sequel, I
Still Know More Than You) has helped thousands
of people reach the top. Bob's motto is simple,
straight, and no-nonsense: "The only thing standing
between you and your goals is you … and your goals."
Yet, for a man who has inspired so many, Bob Patterson
himself has a long way to go. Bob's a complex guy …
a sensitive guy, but he's also a little self-important,
self-absorbed, and self-deluded. Thousands of Americans
may clamor to take his seminars, buy his tapes and
read his books, but the truth is, the public
Bob Patterson is a facade.
You see, Bob's been in a slump ever since his wife,
Janet, walked out on him eight months ago. As loathe
as he is to admit it, Janet gave Bob his edge. The
tension she brought to their relationship — emotional
and physical — motivated the motivator. But out of the
blue, Janet walks back into his life, and things get
even more complicated. Having spent the past eight
months on a spiritual quest to "find herself," Janet
wants to rejoin the world and move back in. Reluctantly,
Bob agrees, if only to reinvigorate his own drive and
perhaps give some direction to his son, Jeffrey,
whom Bob can't even motivate to get off the sofa.
Back at the L.A. offices of Patterson Seminar Training,
Bob's mentor and partner, Landau, has his hands full
constantly trying to reassure Bob that he has plenty
of hair left and that height doesn't matter to women.
Then there's his new assistant, Claudia, a newly
wheelchair-bound klutz, and his intern, Vic,
who idolizes Bob, but isn't exactly the
sharpest knife in the drawer.
To quote Bob, "I'm just a guy, just a mortal man who
tries to make his way in this world by empowering
others." Question is, can he practice what he preaches?
With the help of his family, friends, and co-workers,
Bob just might find the proper motivation.
